Melbourne’s biggest venues and stadiums
If you’re in Melbourne on holiday or travelling, it’s likely you’ll also visit some sort of event, concert, or sports match while you’re here too.
So this week, we’re sharing some of our favourite stadiums and event venues, and the sorts of events they host.
Melbourne Cricket Ground
Commonly referred to as ‘the MCG’ or simply ‘The ‘G’, the Melbourne Cricket Ground is quintessentially Australian.
Globally, it’s 10th largest playing ground by capacity (it can hold just over 100,000 spectators!), and it plays host to cricket events as well as international soccer and rugby matches.
But it’s best known for hosting the AFL season during 9 months of the year.
AFL (or Australian Rules Football, but probably better known as ‘the footy’!) is a staple of Australian - and particularly Melbourne - culture.
If you’re visiting Melbourne between March and September, we highly recommend getting to the ‘G to witness our awesome sport in person!

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre hosts all kinds of events, from concert tours to exhibitions and fairs.
Within just the first few weeks of 2020, MCEC hosts Jojo Siwa, Louis Theroux, the Bridal and Honeymoon Expo, and the World Travel Expo!
Safe to say it’s a versatile space with something always going on!
Melbourne’s very own ‘Eiffel Tower’, the Arts Centre is comprised of concert halls and theatres to showcase great talents and big shows.
The Arts Centre can be found just over the river, right on Southbank. It hosts all kinds of theatrical performances, including classical music, comedy, theatre, dance, opera, and even circus shows!
The Crown Entertainment complex is made up of restaurants, shopping, cinemas, and of course, the bright lights of the casino!
Even if you don’t know a thing about Blackjack or Poker, simply walking through the casino is an experience in itself!
Rod Laver Arena
Best known for hosting the Australian Open annually in January, Rod Laver Area is the main arena in Melbourne park.
In addition to tennis, the arena has also hosted basketball matches, wrestling, skateboarding, and even swimming, when a temporary pool was built in 2007!
It’s also hosted many international and local entertainment events, including Elton John, REd Hot Chili Peppers, Pink, and Katy Perry.
Regarded as the heart and soul of Melbourne, Federation Square hosts world-class cultural attractions and events throughout the entire year.
Situated on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD, it also lies just across from Flinders Street station.
When you visit here, the first thing you'll notice is the unique architecture and geometric facade that towers over you.
Outside, in the actual square, you’ll find a ton of cafes, restaurants, and bars, while inside you’ll find markets, expos, and events.
The National Gallery of Victoria’s Australian art collection can also be found in Fed Square (while NGV International is located just over the river, right next to the Arts Centre and State Theatre.)
