Cheap accommodation in Melbourne for White Night & basketball
At Urban Central, our mission is to provide cheap accommodation in Melbourne, no matter the occasion. While many of our residents are travellers from all around the world, we also welcome locals.
Most of the time, they’re heading into the city for a big event, and choose to make a weekend out of it by staying a couple of nights with us, too.
In addition to the ongoing Melbourne International Film Festival, we’re also seeing many local visitors book rooms for two more huge events: White Night 2019, and the upcoming USA vs. Aussie basketball games at Marvel Stadium.
White Night Reimagined 2019
White Night may still be in its early years, but it’s fast become a staple on Melbourne’s events calendar!
And for the first time in its history, it won’t just be running over one night, either!
This year White Night has been reimagined, bringing spectacular light and sound shows down to the CBD over not one, not two, but three nights:
- Thursday 22nd August - 7pm to 12am
- Friday 23rd August - 7pm to 12am
- Saturday 24th August - 7pm to 2am

Save the date! White Night Melbourne is back this year but not as you know it. Introducing White Night Reimagined where three key Melbourne precincts will be transformed across three nights from 22-24 August. For more details, visit our website (see link in bio). #whitenight
With so many different events to see and three whole nights to do it, why not make a whole weekend of it?
Instead of having to head back every night, why not make it into a mini-holiday and stay a night or two at our hostel?
We offer cheap accommodation in Melbourne, allowing you to enjoy everything on offer during the new and expanded White Night!
This year’s events will be showcased at a number of different locations throughout Melbourne, with tons on offer at each spot:
- Birrarung Marr
- Treasury Gardens
- Arts Centre Melbourne
- National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)
- Carlton Gardens
This year’s theme is senses. Each location will feature performances and fixtures designed around a specific theme!
If you want to check out the full program click here. Here are a couple of highlights...
The Physical Realm
Hosted at Birrarung Marr, the Physical Realm presents incredible acrobatic stunts and performances that will make you feel as though you have been transported to another world.
Combining circus skills, trapeze, dance, and incredible projections, this extraordinary show is all about making your eyes widen in surprise and amazement!
The Sensory Realm
The Sensory Realm will excite every single one of your senses: sight, smell, touch, taste and sound… all five are represented here!
Hosted at Treasury Gardens, you will see and hear things that you keep you mesmerised.
One of the most popular exhibits is the Pollution Pods. This olfactory experience allows you to experience different levels of air pollution, from pristine Norway to crowded New Delhi.
What’s happening in Melbourne’s art precinct?
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will also be hosting a number of events during White Night that you definitely don't want to miss out on.
The famous Terracotta Warriors from the Qin Dynasty will be on display: imagine seeing in person eight soldiers as well as two full size horses!
The NGV itself will also be playing host to one of the projections that characterise White Night, with this year’s theme being indigenous artwork.
Just next door from the NGV, the Arts Centre is transforming into a tribute to music - one that’s sure to appeal to the music-lover inside!
That includes SUPERDRONE, a tribute to drone music.
From the didgeridoo to the modern forms of jazz and rock n’ roll, drone music has been influencing the music we listen to for a lot longer than you might have realised.
If you’ve never noticed, this exhibit will open your eyes to the trippy, almost otherworldly sound of drone music.
