Yes! You’re officially engaged now, with an elaborate wedding ceremony on the horizon. And you’re desperate for up-to-date, trendy wedding ideas.

Alternatively, you work in the wedding business yourself, either as a cake maker, dressmaker or event stylist. You’re looking for an opportunity to network, or just keep tabs on what’s new in the industry.

Either way, it’s easy to feel completely swamped by the rapidly moving trends, and the hundreds and even thousands of wedding suppliers and ideas floating around.

If only there was a place where you could see all of this in-person…

You’re in luck - on Sunday 30th June 2019, The Bridal & Wedding Expo sets up shop in the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).

Read on to find out what all the fuss is about. Travelling from afar? Why not make a weekend out of it and take advantage of cheap accommodation in Melbourne for your weekend visit.

Bride Survival Guide

Anybody who’s ever attended a convention knows that it can be overwhelming. It isn’t uncommon to end up missing a panel you were eager to catch, or accidentally forget to return to an interesting vendor.

And who can forget the sore feet from spending all day standing?

Luckily, there’s a lot of overlap between backpacking and attending a convention. So much so, that we’ve consulted the seasoned travellers at our Melbourne hostel for their tips, and how they apply to convention guests.

Pre-register before the bridal fair

Queues - does anybody like them?

Skip the line and save some time by pre-registering and buying your ticket in advance.

Not to mention, it also guarantees you a spot should tickets sell out!

Best of all, you’re set to save when you pre-book online. Book now to receive $22 tickets, or pay $27 when you turn up on the day.

Plan, plan, plan!

The worst part about conventions is accidentally missing something you really wanted to see.

The best way around this is to simply know what’s going on

Step 1: get a map guide of the MCEC to familiarise yourself with the layout of the hall, as well as the various theatres.

Step 2: locate each of the wedding suppliers and vendors you want to see.

Step 3: create an itinerary that includes everything you’re here to see.

In addition to accounting for everything you want to see, you’ll also want to make note of nearby cafes and restaurants for when your stomach starts rumbling.

Ideally, you’ll want to shortlist places that are close so you don’t lose any time you could be spending exploring!

Bring a friend

We can’t recommend this enough: get a second opinion!

While it’s your special day, it can still be overwhelming; bringing a friend can certainly help you navigate the waters.

You might even like to bring your future husband or wife, of course: decorations, music and style of your wedding should be something both of you are happy with.

Failing that, invite a friend who you know for a fact has a good sense of style - don’t be afraid to pick their brains for suggestions, ideas, and their opinion.

Prepare yourself

Start by wearing comfortable shoes and packing a water bottle.

For wedding planners and event stylists using this as an opportunity to network, you’ll want to make yourself presentable. Don’t forget the business cards, too!

And if you’re in the process of wedding planning, it’s also a good idea to come to the event with a budget in mind. Even if it’s a relatively loose one, it will help you start to paint a picture of what you may be able to afford, versus elements that will become more of a nice-to-have, rather than a need-to-have.

And finally, if you’re going to be staying in Melbourne overnight for the 2019 Bridal and Wedding Expo, you’ll also want to book accommodation near MCEC!
