Looking for a laugh during your stay in Melbourne?

If you’re coming down to Melbourne at any point between the 27th of March and 22nd of April, you’re in luck: you’ll be arriving right in the middle of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF)!

For the out-of-towners among us, the MICF is a Melbourne staple. Now in its 33rd year, this annual event sees the country’s (and the world’s) top comedians take to the stage in venues all over the city.

The result is an entire month of non-stop chuckles, belly laughs, and guffaws.

Is this your first time coming down to the show?

If so, you’ll want to put some thought into your plan!

Plan your attendance so you catch your favourite shows!

No matter your sense of humour, there’s bound to be someone here for you.

The problem? Finding them among so many standout shows!

As such, proper planning is key if you want to get the most out of your trip to the 2019 MICF.

We recommend starting by using the official show list to narrow down acts that sound interesting to you. This link here also contains some curated lists which you can use to create your plan.

It’s important to note that there’s no single venue - rather, the festival is held at a range of venues all across the CBD including Fed Square, Melbourne Town Hall, and Melbourne Museum.

As such, you’ll want to take note of the venues and plan how you’re going to get around.

Explore something new

It’s not just big names like your Charlie Pickerings, Arj Barkers or Wil Andersons that will be coming to Melbourne - there are also plenty of up-and-coming (but just as funny) names too, in a range of different genres.

At Urban Central, we’re big believers in supporting fresh talent - you never know which ones might blow up in the coming years!

We also suggest stepping out of your comfort zone a little bit. In addition to your comedy staples (stand-up, musicals, etc.), the MICF also features a whole host of unconventional, left-of-field shows.

Support local talent

Want to support local artists? Don’t worry, the MICF has plenty.

And we aren’t just talking about Melbourne favourites like Tommy Little, Kitty Flanagan, or Dave Hughes. There are countless local acts participating in this year’s festival, too!

We know what you’re thinking: “23 pages? I don’t have time to sift through that!”

That’s understandable. As the world’s third-biggest comedy festival, there are a lot of acts going on. You want to support local acts… but how do you go about finding them?

One great place to start is with Local Laughs.

Running for 15 years, think of Local Laughs as a mystery box of local comedy. Each night has a different local comedian - you might get a big name or you could get someone who’s just starting out their career.

Either way, you won’t have to worry about a dud show - the list of comedians is carefully curated, ensuring a great night no matter who you draw!

Check out some foreign shows

With the word “international” being the second part of the festival’s name, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of overseas acts making their way to Melbourne.

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, this might be a great place to start!

In addition to being a little different, attending international acts might even serve as a bit of a learning experience.

For example, Comedy Zone Asia might grant you some insight into the sillier side of other cultures. All Around The World: The International Comedy Showcase is another great place to start.
