Do you hear the bells ringing?

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is upon us again. Presents, holidays, dinners... the list of things you’ll need to prepare for goes on and on.

And if you’re a sports fan, that’s not the only thing you’ll be preparing for around this time of year...

Yes, that’s right, we’re talking cricket! More specifically, the Boxing Day Test.

The Boxing Day test: an Aussie Christmas tradition

There’s no denying Australia’s a sports-mad nation. And if we were to ask you which sports draw the most from Aussie sports fans, no doubt cricket would be close to the top of the list.

Cricket has a long history down under - and so does the Boxing Day Test for that matter.

Since 1974, the Boxing Day Test has been an Aussie summer tradition - not to mention, one of the biggest events on the cricket calendar.

The concept proved so popular, that it even found its way overseas, with similar tests being held across the Tasman and in South Africa.

And since it’s held over the Christmas break, there’s no need to pull a sickie to watch it!

Each year the Boxing Day Test pits Australia’s finest cricketers against the best teams the rest of the world has to offer.

As is tradition, it’s held in Melbourne’s very own MCG - the home of Aussie cricket.

With sportsmen of this calibre, this test is easily one of the most hyped events in sport.

The Boxing Day Test

When: Wednesday 26th-Sunday 30th December 2018

Where: The ‘G, of course!

Unlike The Ashes, there’s no tradition setting out which countries the Aussies will take on.

Rather, the competition is whichever international team happens to be touring during the Australian cricket season.

And this year, it’s India (a warm नमस्ते to our visitors from the subcontinent!)

This year’s Boxing Day Test lines up perfectly with the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, an annual Test series that pits Australia’s elite cricketers against their Indian counterparts.

With the Indians claiming a 31-run win in the first match of the series, the Aussies face an uphill battle if they want to claim the trophy as their own.

Only time will tell if they’re able to pull this off!

Accommodation for sports fans

As one of the biggest events in the cricket calendar (as well as its holiday timing), it’s no surprise that the Boxing Day Test draws cricket fans from all over the country.

And we haven’t even gotten started on visitors from India, one of the few countries that can legitimately claim to be more cricket-mad than we are!

That’s a lot of out-of-towners coming down to Melbourne - all of whom will need somewhere to stay.

Not all of us have friends or relatives in Melbourne we can call upon. If that’s the case, what are your options?

You could always book a hotel - but hotels are expensive. And since you’ll be spending basically the entire day at the cricket (international tests run for a long time), it can be hard to justify the expense a hotel comes with.

Luckily, there’s another option: an affordable hostel in Melbourne!
