Heading off to the world's (second) most liveable city?

There are just so many things you cannot avoid doing in the Land Down Under - but we've got a soft (or is that biased?) spot for Melbourne.

The Aussie lifestyle is fascinating to the rest of the world - and why not? With incredible sporting venues, theatrical performances, laneways, arguably some of the best coffee, and world-class dining experiences, the Melbourne vibe is simply irresistable.

There's so much to do and see in our little corner of the world, but there are a few stand-outs that are typically Melbourne, that you can't quite experience anywhere else.

Here are some of our favourite things that you can't avoid in our gem of a city.

1. Exploring cobbled laneways filled with artwork

Who would have thought that streets could be transformed into magnificent works of art?

If you’re a tourist or visitor to Melbourne, you can’t miss passing by the famous Melbourne laneways, which are characterised by rich cultural heritage, cafes, restaurants, shops, and more.

Adding laneways to your Melbourne bucket list is an absolute must.

These are some of the most famous that you can explore:

  • Centre Place
  • Hosier Lane
  • AC/DC Lane
  • Tattersalls Lane
  • Meyers Place

2. Hitching a ride on the City Circle tram

No trip to Melbourne is complete until you’ve taken a ride on one of our iconic trams!

One of the most recognisable is the CBD-based City Circle tram.

Best of all, this round trip is totally free. The City Circle tram route (route 35) makes up the perimeter of Melbourne’s free tram zone. Within this zone, you do not need a tram ticket.

You’ll travel past sites including Parliament House, Flinders Street Station, and the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel at Docklands.

The City Circle tram operates between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 10am to 9pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

3. Trying the best coffees

Melbourne has been known to provide some of the best coffee - locals and visitors alike rely on their cup of Joe to start their day on the right foot!

If you’re visiting the CBD, you have choices a-plenty when it comes to finding a good brew.

Whether you want an extra dose of caffeine that will perk you up on the day or you just simply want to try some of Melbourne’s iconic cafes, it’s almost impossible to avoid sharing your love for coffee with Melburnians.

4. Immersing yourself in local and international artwork

Melbourne is always the best place to explore and appreciate art, culture, and creativity.

Whether it is the Arts Centre Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne Museum, and Heide Museum of Modern Art, you cannot help but be filled with inspiration and appreciation for the arts.

Melbourne is known as a home for world-class arts and rich cultural heritage, so if you’re visiting our city soon, be sure to schedule in a day to visit some of our galleries and museums.

5. Experiencing a sport event at the MCG

Embrace Melbourne’s passion for the sport as you visit Australia’s largest and most visited sports stadium.

Visiting between March and October?

You can’t afford to miss an AFL game. Who you barrack for is usually the main cause of divide between us Melburnians! The finals series wraps up around the end of September, but between then and the start of the next season, you can also enjoy the following sports:

  • Cricket (including the Boxing Day Test)
  • Rugby Union
  • Rugby League
  • FIFA World Cup qualifiers
  • International rules football

Concerts and performances - and even professional wrestling! - are also held here.

You can also book an Ultimate Foodie Tour.

7. Appreciating nature in the Botanic Gardens

Enjoy the peace and quiet of the natural and urban landscapes - even when you’re right in the middle of Melbourne!
