Can you believe we’re up to finals season already?

Hostel in Melbourne for AFL Grand Final

Turn up for a haircut or pop into your local supermarket, and conversation will inevitably drift towards which team you barrack for, and their finals chances (or if they didn’t qualify, a respectful “better luck next year!”)

Open the morning paper and you’ll see sports journos frantically debating who’s going to claim the 2018 premiership.

It’s nearly time for the prelim games; those penultimate matches which will tell us who’ll be playing for the 2018 premiership in two weeks' time.

Finals buzz is well and truly in the air. And that includes at Urban Central!

How we go there: a quick recap of the 2018 season

In some ways, the 2018 season was typical.

For starters, the Saints once again failed to make the finals (as is tradition), and the final 8 stayed more-or-less the same, with 3 teams from last year’s top 8 cycling out.

Of course, “sure things” don’t exist in sports, especially AFL, so there were plenty of surprise results this season.

How about when the Kangaroos somehow managed to defeat the Swans at home, avoiding what everybody thought would be another wooden spoon?

Or Fremantle outdoing even themselves, somehow managing to concede 23 consecutive goals to Geelong?

As with any other year, the 2018 home and away season has been full of thrills!

Who’s still in it?

  • Richmond vs. Collingwood - Friday 21st September, 7:50pm MCG
  • West Coast vs. Melbourne - Saturday 22nd September, 3:20pm Optus Stadium, Perth

We may as well start with the minor and reigning premiers, Richmond.

The Tigers have had a pretty good season: They’ve been top of the ladder for 15 rounds, with the punters widely tipping another Tigers premiership.

They’re set to play Collingwood this Friday night, which is sure to be one of the biggest games in history!

Two powerhouse Melbourne-based teams. The MCG. 100,000 expected fans. It’s going to be a HUGE one!

The other prelim sees Melbourne head over to the west coast to try to beat the Eagles, making their first Grand Final appearance since 1964!

We’ve got a sneaky suspicion that for all those fans whose teams did not make the finals, that they’ve got a soft spot for the Dees and are hoping they can take it all the way! And of course, we’d much rather the Cup stay in Victoria!

With three Victorian teams left in the finals, the odds are pretty good.

Coming off a somewhat rocky 2017, the Eagles returned in 2018 with force, sitting almost at the top of the ladder for much of the season (and dethroning Richmond for four glorious weeks).

If there’s any team left in the game that’ll knock the Tigers off their perch, it might be this one.

The big one: 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership

This year the Grand Final will take place on Saturday, 29th September.

The streets will be empty as people converge in pubs and bars across town to soak up the most important date on Melbourne’s sporting calendar.

The pre-game entertainment will set the scene for an electrifying day, with the Black Eyed Peas and Aussie favourite Jimmy Barnes confirmed as pre-show entertainment before the first bounce.

Barnes will also perform a free concert at the ‘G after the game from 7pm, while is daughter Mahalia will perform the national anthem before the game.

Don’t forget about the public holiday!

Extend your trip an extra night and take advantage of the new Grand Final Day public holiday!

That’s right, we Melburnians have a whole day off the day before the Grand Final to soak up all things footy.

The highlight of the day is no doubt the Grand Final Parade, where players from each Grand Final team are paraded through the streets of Melbourne.

The Parade starts at the Old Treasury Building on Spring Street and conclude at the AFL Grand Final Live Site at Yarra Park.

Yarra Park is also home to a 4-day Footy Festival which runs from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th October. Entry is free!
