While we all barrack for different footy teams, there’s nothing that unites Melbourne more than our reputation as the world’s most livable city (that, and a lifelong rivalry with Sydney!)
And if your definition of “living” means going out and having a good time, Melbourne definitely lives up to its title. This week, our Melbourne hostel shares some of the best restaurants and bars that line Southbank.
Here at Urban Central, we spend a lot of our time waxing lyrical about the events and going-ons in the city, including the best places to get some food, a drink, or of course, a coffee!
When it comes to trendy restaurants and bars, there’s no competing with Melbourne’s Southbank district. Here are just some of our favourites, all located a couple minutes’ walk away from our Melbourne hostel.
Riverside bars and restaurants
It’s not hard to see where Southbank’s reputation as Melbourne’s entertainment district comes from.
With restaurants lining the entire promenade, it’s difficult to find a spot which hasn’t been taken up by a restaurant or cafe!
Whether you’re looking for a casual place for drinks or want to receive the royal treatment, the variety of dining options along Southbank is mind-boggling. No matter your taste, there’s bound to be something that fits your palette… and your budget!
If you don’t know where to start, here are a couple of our favourites:
Hopscotch Urban Beer Bar
Are you a fan of craft beer?
If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that Southbank is the home of Melbourne’s craft beer scene.
With a range of breweries operating along the promenade, there are plenty of options for local and international craft beers.
With over 30 different beers on tap, Hopscotch consistently tops many critics’ “best of” lists.
And it’s not hard to see why: fantastic views of the Yarra and Melbourne’s distinctive skyline combined with a huge list of local and international brews… what’s not to love?
Speaking of international brews, beers from around the world are all equally represented at Southbank.
PJ O’Brien’s is a long-standing watering hole that specialises in providing – what else? – an authentic Irish pub atmosphere.
And if you’re looking for a taste of Europe, why not drop by Hophaus Bier Bar & Grill or Cervo Cafe e Bar?
Offering a huge range of classic German and Italian brews respectively, both venues are great choices for those looking for a taste of the old country.
Pamper yourself with lunch or dinner at Crown Casino
You can’t deny that Crown is home to some of the fanciest eateries in Melbourne.
As the centrepiece of Melbourne’s entertainment district, you can bet there’s a whole range of fantastic restaurants inside – if you have enough time, you can even fit in a shopping trip as well!
We’re only scratching the surface here, but with options ranging from the Parisian-style dining at Bistro Guillaume to Chinese-inspired hybrid cuisine at SIlks, every sort of cuisine and preference is represented inside Crown.
And of course, it wouldn’t be Crown without some truly high-end establishments.
Dinner by Heston
Followers of celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal are surely familiar with Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.
Enjoy an unparalleled dining experience in Heston’s sophisticated, modern, and supreme Melbourne restaurant.
Conservatory at Crown
If you’ve always wanted to live in the lap of luxury stop by Conservatory at Crown.
With its marble floors, opulent decor, and fresh seafood buffet, this restaurant is a must for those who want to indulge – even if just for the night!
Craving something a bit more casual?
If fine dining isn’t really your thing, there are also a range of casual dining spaces to grab a bite to eat.
The Merrywell is a fantastic choice for fans of juicy American-style burgers.
Best of all, it’s located directly across from the Melbourne Convention Centre, making it a convenient pit stop for exhibitors and visitors alike.
If you’re a fan of American-style barbeque, San Antone by Blodso is a must-visit. Owned by LA-based Kevin Bludso, San Antone brings a uniquely Texan flavour of barbeque to Southbank – yum!
