Can you believe it’s December already? Go outside and you’ll start seeing the tell-tale signs of the Christmas season - trees, lights and decorations - popping up wherever you go as people prepare for the holidays.

Like any other city, Melbourne’s Christmas and new year’s calendar is completely jam packed with events to cap off another year.

The holiday season brings many down to Melbourne: some from rural areas keen to catch a glimpse of the city’s unique Christmas and New Year’s atmosphere; others, to visit family members who live near the city.

Whatever your reason for stopping by the city this December, there are plenty of things to do. Here are just a couple of exciting things happening during the tail-end of 2017!

Christmas and New Years Eve accommodation Melbourne

Christmas in Melbourne

It’s hard to go anywhere in the city during November and December without seeing a Christmas-themed event or decoration on every corner.

From Flinders Street station to Queen Victoria Market, the entire city dresses up and puts on a show!

Here are just a couple of events and celebrations to enjoy when you visit Melbourne at Christmastime.

Carols by Candlelight

Now in its 79th year, the Vision Australia Carols by Candlelight is one of Melbourne’s most iconic Christmas events. Join thousands of others for a celebration of all things Christmas and sing along with live performances from both local and international names.

Not only is it one of the most Christmassy things you can do, you’ll also be supporting a good cause! All proceeds from ticket sales help Vision Australia deliver services that support children who are blind or vision-impaired.

Tickets sell fast, so be sure to book today.

Christmas Square

Every year, Federation Square transforms into a Christmas wonderland. The man in red will be there, ready to take all the kids’ Christmas wishes underneath the supersized 16m Christmas tree.

Fed Square itself is also home to a spectacular night-time light show. Every evening from the 24th November to 25th December between 9 and 11pm, the buildings of Federation Square light up with intricate projections of Christmas characters and stories for all to enjoy.

And just down the road on Swanston Street, Melbourne Town Hall becomes home to Epicure’s gingerbread village. You’ve seen gingerbread houses - but if you’ve ever wanted to see what a master pastry chef can do with gingerbread, stop by and prepare to be amazed!

Christmas = shopping

Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas time without the mad, last-minute rush to buy gifts for everyone you know! So why not save yourself a bit of trouble and start a bit earlier?

In our (totally unbiased) opinion, Melbourne’s shopping scene is the best in the country. The CBD is home to every type of establishment, from fashion houses such as Gucci and Dior down to the tiniest niche stores like the Minotaur comic book store or Muses of Mystery magic shop.

And who could forget Myer’s annual Christmas windows?

Myer's Christmas windows are a Melbourne tradition! For decades, Myer’s intensely detailed, hand-crafted dioramas are a favourite for all ages. Stop by to gawk at this year’s theme, and enjoy live entertainment, Christmas workshops, and gift giveaways.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for your significant other or a gag gift for a close friend, you’re sure to find the perfect gift at one of Melbourne’s local boutiques or major retailers.

New Year’s Eve in Melbourne

Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show is without a doubt the highlight of our NYE celebrations. Usher in 2018 with a spectacular firework show - either from the comfort of the Yarra River’s grassy shores or from one of the many restaurants and clubs that stay open to bring in the new year.

In fact, Melbourne is quite generous: instead of one firework show, the city puts on two – one at the more family-friendly time of 9:30 pm and one at the stroke of midnight.

Early evening New Year’s Eve celebrations

Melbourne’s early evening program is great for visitors with little ones! Starting from 6pm onwards, Early Eve at Yarra and Footscray Parks feature all the exciting parts of NYE 2018, without the late night out.

Families can enjoy free, family-friendly live entertainment at both sites, food stalls, carnival-style attractions and even an open-air showing of short films!

All of this, of course, builds up to the headliner event: the 9:30pm fireworks!

The best part is it’s absolutely free! Pack an esky or picnic basket, fill it with snacks, sit down and make yourself comfortable as you enjoy this spectacular show with your little ones.

The midnight show

Join thousands of revellers in welcoming 2018 with Melbourne’s midnight fireworks show!

While the fireworks can be viewed from vantage points almost anywhere across the entire city, for the full experience, head down to one of the following:

  • Docklands
  • Flagstaff Gardens
  • Treasury Gardens
  • Kings Domain
  • Federation Square

There’ll be free entertainment, food - and most importantly of all, that magical New Year’s Eve atmosphere!

And if you’re a bit of a party animal, there are plenty of clubs, restaurants and pubs that keep their doors open throughout the night, many with their own new year’s programs. Start your new year with a bang!
