On Friday, 9th June, some of the world’s biggest soccer players – including the one and only Lionel Messi – will gather on our hallowed turf to take part in the Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour.

Brazil vs. Argentina

The Argentina-Brazil football rivalry is just one of many rivalries diving these sport-loving nations!

Games are often highly animated, with fans unable to hold back their passion for their highly skilled teams. The rivalry is also known as the Battle of the South Americans, and ESPN has named it as the best sporting rivalry between nation sides.

And now, Melbourne gets its chance to experience the passion and infatuation of this rivalry as both teams make their way to Australia this June!

Their last meeting was back in November for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification, where Brazil scored a victorious 3-0 win. The next match is a friendly, but that’s no reason for Argentina to seek revenge!

Lionel Messi and the Argentina squad

Arguably the world’s best player and one of the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi will be making his way to Australia as part of the Argentinian squad.

He’s joined by:

  • Goalkeeper Sergio Romero (Manchester United)
  • Defender Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)
  • Forward Angel Di Maris (Paris Saint-Germain)

Brazil squad

  • Goalkeeper Diego Alves (Valencia)
  • Defender Alex Sandro (Juventus)
  • Midfielder Fernandinho (Manchester City)
  • Midfielder Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

Brazil vs. Caltex Socceroos

Brazil will also hang around in Australia for a little longer, taking part in a match on the following Tuesday, 13th June against our very own Socceroos!

The Socceroos will be using this opportunity to test themselves against the world’s very best.

The Brazil vs. Argentina game is SOLD OUT, so this is your only other opportunity to see the Brazil soccer team in action. Tickets are selling fast, so head to Ticketek now. (MCC members – get your tickets here.)

Plan your journey to the soccer

The match is completely sold out, so it’s going to be a busy one!

Getting there

Getting to the MCG from Urban Central is simple! Choose your method below:

By car:

The MCG is less than 4km from Urban Central. Simply travel down City Road, pass through Alexandra Gardens and Kings Domain over the Yarra onto Olympic Boulevard.

MCG parking can be limited, so if you can, leave the car and opt for public transport instead.

By tram:

Our recommendation. Catch the 12 tram up Clarendon Street towards the city, then swap to the 70 or 75 tram and head east down Flinders Street. Note the 75 tram takes you along Wellington Street resulting in a five-minute walk to the ‘G, while the 70 takes you down Swan Street, ending with a shorter 2-minute walk.

By bus:

Catch the 234 bus from Urban Central’s doorstep up City Road towards Flinders Street. From there, catch either the 70 or 75 tram, as above.

Arrive early

While the game doesn’t kick off until 8:05pm (yes, it’s that precise!) gates open from 5:30pm. Head to the MCG post dinner or grab a bite and drink from one of the many bars and cafes located within the ‘G.

Alternatively, make your way to the city of Fed Square to enjoy dinner and a drink before hopping on the tram and heading to the MCG. Find a list of great restaurants near Fed Square here.
