Why do I need one?

It is not compulsory to have a tax file number, however most employers will request that you forward one. It is free to apply and beneficial as if you do not have a tax file number your pay may be subject to hefty deductions of up to 50% tax!

how do I apply?

You can apply online through the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website. You will not be required to provide proof of identity as the information you supply will be compared to the Department of Immigrations and Citizenships records - so make sure you are eligible to work in Australia before you apply!

how long will it take?
|
It generally takes between 10 to 28 days to process your application. It will be posted out to you, so if you are on the road think ahead and plan where you will be over this time! We are happy to accept your mail here at Urban Central - if it arrives here before you do we will hold onto it until you arrive (just make sure you have a reservation with us or it may be returned to sender!). If you have just left us we generally hold onto mail for a week, so you will need to call us to organise a forwarding address!
