Six floors up, participants suit up with gloves and straps. One staff member is situated at the top and another at the bottom of the building to belay (control) the jumper. The line is securely fed through several karabiners.

After being securely fastened to the line the jumper is asked to sit out on the edge of the building, feet dangling over the side (this is when the adrenalin rush starts). The jumper then leans out over the side until he or she is perpendicular to the face of the building and begins to take steps down the face. As confidence increases, the jumper moves faster down the face of the building and can push off to ‘free fall’ to the ground.

In 1989 Peter ‘Macka’ Mackail, an ex-SAS soldier, started the first commercial Rap Jumping site at the Barron Gorge in Cairns, North Queensland. Originally catering for the huge backpacker market.

The original Rap Jumping style is a S.R.T. (single rope technique) developed in 1990 by Macka Mackail. Rap jumping started by jumping off high rise buildings: the first being the Pacific Hotel in Cairns. Since then Mackail’s team have been involved in over forty high rise hotels and cliffs around the world; the latest big jump was twenty floors at the Stamford Plaza, Melbourne in January 2007. The S.R.T. system has a marshal person on the top and a brake person on the bottom. All the brake person has to do is slightly pull the rope and the descending jumper stops totally safely. The approved equipment (ropes, harnesses, karabiners and descenders) must come up to the highest standards, thus all ages can enjoy this safe adrenalin sport. There are now over thirty commercial operations around the globe with different styles, techniques and names like Aussie Rappel, Forward Abseiling and Rope Rushing.
